Not surprisingly, the bigger and more elaborate a wedding cake is, the higher the cost of a wedding cake will be. A wedding cake featuring lots of design elements, including sugar flowers, fondant details, many tiers, and unique shapes, will cost more than a simpler cake with classic buttercream icing, a few fresh flowers, and fewer tiers. While your flavor choice likely won’t have an impact on your wedding cake’s price, requesting certain custom flavors may raise your wedding cake cost a bit.

Your cake doesn't have to be round, vanilla, white or tiered if you don’t want it to be—in fact, your options are pretty much endless. To nail down a design you love, look to your venue, the time of year and, of course, your personal style. If it's a rustic fall wedding, you might go for a clean, earthy palette and a perfectly undone look (maybe something half-naked with buttercream and richly colored berries). For a modern loft wedding, you might choose a streamlined cake with asymmetrical tiers and a graphic design. As you're deciding on a look and flavors, take our fun Style Quiz, browse real wedding cake photos and save your favorites to show your baker.
Ron’s company maintains an internship program and he and his staff mentor up to 12 interns a year. Aspiring participants who wish to apply to this intense, full-time, non-paying program must be current or recent graduates of an accredited pastry-arts program. To be considered, they must submit samples of their work along with recommendations from a chef-instructor. Interns can expect to work a minimum of three months; they will follow a classic kitchen rotation, which includes stints in baking, decorating, cleaning, and above all, practicing, which Ron says is the basis of all else. He notes that students will leave with a solid knowledge of baking, structuring cakes, and fashioning sugar flowers and confectionery decoration.
Wedding cakes can go from the easiest to one of the most complicated decorations; each has its very own creative differences depending on the imaginative juices of the baker. They ought to satisfy the main function of the cake, that whatever embellishments it possess, it can still be edible and can be eaten.

I’ve been undecided about changing my surname, but it means a lot to me fiancé so I’m going to take the plunge and become Mrs Taylor. I’ve not told anyone (well except now all of you!) so for my Marks and Spencer cake I’m going to order a personalised wedding cake topper that says Mr & Mrs Taylor in pale blue and put that on top of the cake, as well as mixing up some blue icing, to dot all over the cake. Then I’m going to do a big ‘reveal’ at the wedding as a surprise for my husband-to-be! I think it would be such a nice wedding day surprise for him and I know the cake will look fabulous. I just need to keep quiet until the wedding day!
Lastly, don’t forget that there will be a delivery charge to deliver your cake to the venue.  How much that fee will be, depends on the location of your venue from our bakery.  The further we have to travel, the higher your delivery cost will be.  In some cases, it’s not only the distance we have to travel, but the time it will take to make the delivery – traffic, difficult roads, lack of parking, etc.  I would say our average delivery fee is about $50-65, with locations such as Santa Barbara and Los Angeles being $100-150+.  When you consider how stressful a wedding cake delivery can be, getting the cake to the venue on time, battling the heat, the weight of the cake, and the fact that they are flat out awkward to handle, you should always opt for delivery…let the professionals do what they do!
I find making sugar flowers calming, there's simething quite zen about the repetetive task of making petals, and it gives a great sense of achievment, but it does take some time. If making your own flowers it's best to start early. The cake I made uses my friend's favourite flowers, poppies, made from sugar, and making 12 of these took me a good couple of days. The method for the poppies can be used for other open petalled flowers, such as open roses and anemones.
Upping your wedding cake budget to £300 gives a couple more options. If you’re looking to feed a large wedding party, supermarket wedding cakes are a great fit for this kind of budget. Retailers such as Marks and Spencer and Waitrose offer a lovely variety of wedding cakes that serve up to 120 people. Whilst this is a great deal for couples planning a wedding on a budget, the cakes are mass-produced and are usually limited to basic flavours such as chocolate, lemon and vanilla.

Melt a little marmalade in the microwave or on the stove, until it runny. Brush this over the cake, it will stick the marzipan to the cake. I find the easiest way to get the layer of marzipan draped over the cake safely is to first drape it over a rolling pin, and then roll it over the surface of the cake. Dust it with some icing sugar or cornflour first to stop it sticking.

Be prepared to pay anywhere from $2 to $20 per slice. Naturally, the more complicated the cake, the more you'll pay. Fondant is generally more expensive than buttercream, and if you want elaborately molded shapes, vibrant colors or handmade sugar flowers, you'll pay for the cake designer's time and labor. One cost-cutting option is to order the cake of your dreams made on a small scale for a price you can comfortably afford, and then order sheet cakes of the same flavor to be cut in the kitchen (some but not all designers will do this). Bottom line: Once you find your baker, you'll want to work with them to come up with a wedding cake design that falls within your budget.
Its no surprise that this was one of the favourites on the day. If you or your man are a lego fan then this is one for you. We purchased a lego bride and groom topper from eBay and placed these on the top. Then to add to the fun we placed a few of our other favourite characters as guests at the wedding. Who doesn’t want a hot dog man at their wedding?!
The biggest misconception about wedding cakes is they're designed to look good but taste like cardboard. As with anything beautiful, it's what's inside that really counts. When you meet with your prospective bakers, taste lots of samples (now, this is research we think you’ll want to get behind). You might be surprised to discover it isn't average cake. Top designers are working with complex flavorings such as coconut and Key lime, blood orange and mango, and chocolate-hazelnut and mocha. You might also go for flavors based on the season, with heavier combinations like chocolate cake with mocha-praline filling perfect for winter weddings and lighter sponge cakes with fruits, curds and preserves more ideal for summer affairs.
For less than £100, you can expect a very simple, single tier wedding cake iced with buttercream (or left naked) as opposed to fondant. As this is the lower end of the spectrum, there’s not much room for personalised details or big masterpieces, but with £100 to spend, you can expect a small, simple and pretty wedding cake that serves around 20 people.
Our wedding is a diy affair. The cake is going to be my fellas job. He’s an engineer, so wants to build a crane that will be lifting the top teir inti place/hovering it above the rest of the cake. It’s a chance for him to put his personality onto something. He also wants to use his new laser cutter to design and make a bespoke topper. Winning the cake would be amazing snd give him the time and confidence to concentrate on these decorative features. Xx
If your heart's set on flowers, go with fresh blooms or choose flat designs such as painted flower motifs instead of ornate sugar flowers. Sugar flowers are very labor intensive—it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours to mold and dust one pretty sugar replica. (Now you know why they're so gorgeous.) To pare down the cost, choose a simple cake with one large stem or a spray of flowers on a single-tier cake. Another trick is to choose sugar flower types that don't require as much time and detail. For example, skip the cascade of peonies and shoot for hydrangeas or calla lilies. But fresh flowers are one of your best bets for a cost-friendly alternative. Just let your florist in on your plans so they can source pesticide-free and food-safe buds.
Unlike wedding venues and florists, which usually adjust their prices according to the time of year and season, wedidng cake costs don’t tend to follow the same pattern. Whilst the height of August will be a much busier time for wedding cake suppliers, you shouldn’t expect to see too much increase in the price depending on the time of year you’re ordering for.
A good, search engine optimised and mobile friendly website is essential these days. Make sure yours can be easily updated and that you get great photos of your designs.Social Media can also be very effective, especially when starting up. Create a great looking Facebook page and update it regularly. Instagram and Pinterest are also very popular for wedding planning and Twitter is good for networking and making contacts.

Ron actively participates in the organization’s fund-raising events such as Bid Against Hunger, an annual, sold-out culinary extravaganza, and Generation Harvest’s Summer in the City. Additionally, he encourages clients who might want a cake that is really too grand for their actual number of guests, to allow a donation—in their names—of the additional cake to City Harvest, a fulfilling way to share the happiness of an occasion with those less fortunate.
Fruitcake may be traditional, but it’s by no means everyone’s favourite. When you’ve chosen your cake maker, ask for a tasting consultation so that you can try the different flavours on offer. Choose one to use throughout or go for something different on every tier, the choice is entirely yours. We would recommend thinking of your guests at least a little since your wedding cake will almost always be shared.
Some couples go all out buying or renting elaborate cake stands, which are pretty, but not really necessary. Besides, most bakers will provide a decorated base board you can place right on the table. Once you have your cake display, focus on adding to the space around it—choose a fun linen from home, lush greenery, old family wedding photos, candles or flowers to bring some life to the table.

Make certain to spending plan well for your cake as they can be costly relying on the style. Wedding event cake costs range from ₤ 300 as much as ₤ 1000. Anticipate to pay the cake designer's charge in addition to the cost of the cake itself. Do not fail to remember to ask at the bakery do they do complimentary distributions. Let them know the amount of are going to the wedding ceremony this will after that offer the baker a great suggestion on the dimension appropriate to fill up everyone's belly. Many bakeshops have a basic variety of portions for every cake type.
