Ron’s company maintains an internship program and he and his staff mentor up to 12 interns a year. Aspiring participants who wish to apply to this intense, full-time, non-paying program must be current or recent graduates of an accredited pastry-arts program. To be considered, they must submit samples of their work along with recommendations from a chef-instructor. Interns can expect to work a minimum of three months; they will follow a classic kitchen rotation, which includes stints in baking, decorating, cleaning, and above all, practicing, which Ron says is the basis of all else. He notes that students will leave with a solid knowledge of baking, structuring cakes, and fashioning sugar flowers and confectionery decoration.

Thanks to Pinterest, there are about a billion wedding cake photos to choose from!  Typically, a buttercream cake will cost less than a fondant cake.  However, not all designs can be achieved with buttercream, so keep that in mind when looking at cake photos.  Our buttercream cakes start at $6 per serving and our fondant cakes start at $7 per serving.  So here is the easy part – if you want a tiered cake with 100 servings, multiply $6 X 100 and voila, your cake will start at $600 for buttercream.  Does that mean that all buttercream cakes are $6 per serving?  The simple answer is no.  Just like not all fondant cakes will remain at $7 per serving, however, it’s a good place to start.
Traditionally, the cake cutting signifies the end of the reception is near (and cues any sleepy guests that they can politely slip out), so couples typically wait until an hour or so before the party ends to cut it. But if you don't want to interrupt the dance party, there are several optimal times to cut your cake: Do it at the beginning, right after your reception entrance (aka when all eyes are on you) or directly following the last speech when most people are finishing up their main course. Most important, double-check that your photographer has your cake on their shot list so you get a few photos of the cake (and of you cutting it) for your wedding album.

Once you have a sense of basic costs and your favorite designs, it's time to find a baker. Start your search for the right cake baker online: Read real reviews, browse The Knot Marketplace and ask recently married friends for recommendations. Also, if you’ve booked your caterer, they’ll likely suggest cake pros they know and love to work with. Once you have your top three bakers in mind, set up appointments to meet in person, ask them key questions and check out their portfolios. You'll discuss the time and place of the wedding, the degree of formality, the colors and other wedding details that might inform your cake. Don’t forget to bring examples of cakes you love or even swatches of fabric, art, color combos and more that could inspire the end result.

I’ve been undecided about changing my surname, but it means a lot to me fiancé so I’m going to take the plunge and become Mrs Taylor. I’ve not told anyone (well except now all of you!) so for my Marks and Spencer cake I’m going to order a personalised wedding cake topper that says Mr & Mrs Taylor in pale blue and put that on top of the cake, as well as mixing up some blue icing, to dot all over the cake. Then I’m going to do a big ‘reveal’ at the wedding as a surprise for my husband-to-be! I think it would be such a nice wedding day surprise for him and I know the cake will look fabulous. I just need to keep quiet until the wedding day!

The great thing about elegant wedding cakes is that they fit in with most people's wedding plan or theme. Like the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, elegant cakes aren't too hot or too cold, they are ......just right. Ask any young bride, if they were looking for something elegant in their choice of anything - whether it be gown, cake or even groom - and the answer would be a resounding but graceful yes!
Ultimately, New York provided Ron with the most exhilarating and challenging stage for his culinary visions. His artistry has become legendary and he has truly become America’s cake maestro, the wizard and darling of the industry. “I had originally gone to fine art school to study set design, but then dance took over. And now it’s fondant and cake. I am so pleased that the kitchen and I found each other. I’m where I was meant to be.”
A good, search engine optimised and mobile friendly website is essential these days. Sheet Wedding Cakes – A full-size sheet cake typically feeds about 108 people. The cost at your local grocery store or warehouse discount store of a full-size sheet cake will be about $50. A 100 tiered cake would be a combined 3-tier cake. Going by the formula above, you professional wedding cake would be a minimum of $150 for 100 people. But let’s be real. Depending on what you want most professional wedding cake bakers will charge more than $1.50 per slice just for the sheer time to bake and frost a 3-tier cake.
Just as you would with a fine painting, once you've decided exactly how your wedding cake is going to look, make certain that great care is taken to transport it in one piece to the reception site. Most cake designers prefer to deliver the cake themselves (or use an in-house, experienced delivery team to do the job)—and we think paying the extra delivery fee is worth the peace of mind that the cake will arrive to your reception site in top form. Ensure your baker has a contact at your reception site so they can give the catering manager or event planner any pertinent information on handling the cake (it might need to be refrigerated or stationed in a cool, out-of-the-way location). The important thing is for everyone to be in the loop on this dessert delivery.
The type of cake and tightness of time will also affect your icing decision. While it doesn't have the best taste, and is often left on the side of the plate, sugarpaste (fondant) will keep a cake fresh under it's protective layer for a couple of days, and provides a smooth, clean surface to adorn with decorations. On the other hand buttercream or ganache, while tasting delicious, should be applied as late as possible, the night before at the earliest, which could leave you panicking over last minute problems.
Ron certainly knows about opening nights: A former dancer, he fell in love with a chocolate-maker while on tour in Canada, and with typical resolve, he traded in his ballet slippers for a whisk and a spatula. Fortunately, the discipline he had acquired during years of scrupulous training and a rigorous performance schedule—and during his military service in the Israeli army—helped him as he pursued his new vocation. Like many aspiring chefs, he traveled to France and apprenticed in Cannes, Beaujolais, and Lyons.
Some couples go all out buying or renting elaborate cake stands, which are pretty, but not really necessary. Besides, most bakers will provide a decorated base board you can place right on the table. Once you have your cake display, focus on adding to the space around it—choose a fun linen from home, lush greenery, old family wedding photos, candles or flowers to bring some life to the table.
Ordering fewer tiers can save you pounds. Just having a two-tier cake instead of the traditional three could save you almost £200! Choosing a medium and small tier will also help with the budget, it’s the larger tiers that are the most expensive. If you need more cheap wedding cakes for your guests you can also order cutting bars, which work out cheaper than that extra tier.

Be prepared to pay anywhere from $2 to $20 per slice. Naturally, the more complicated the cake, the more you'll pay. Fondant is generally more expensive than buttercream, and if you want elaborately molded shapes, vibrant colors or handmade sugar flowers, you'll pay for the cake designer's time and labor. One cost-cutting option is to order the cake of your dreams made on a small scale for a price you can comfortably afford, and then order sheet cakes of the same flavor to be cut in the kitchen (some but not all designers will do this). Bottom line: Once you find your baker, you'll want to work with them to come up with a wedding cake design that falls within your budget.

Whilst the size of your wedding cake will be a factor in the pricing, the one thing which will have the most impact on how much your wedding cake costs you is the design you choose. Naked and semi-naked wedding cakes involve much less work than fondant and handmade sugar flowers, and the time that the cake takes to be made is closely connected to the price the supplier will charge.
The groom’s cake grew out of an old tradition that is very much in vogue again. These cakes are often playful and depict an interesting or amusing side of the groom’s personality. Additionally, for a large wedding, the groom’s cake provides secondary flavor combinations. This very personal cake can be presented to the groom as a surprise by his bride, and it can be the perfect counterpoint to the “main” cake. Keep in mind that on occasion the groom’s cake might end up being more complicated to execute than the main cake. Moreover, the smaller scale cannot accommodate every idea.

A cake topper that represents the bride and groom in some way is the most important part of the cake and it’s also the best way to bring the bride and groom’s personality and individuality into the wedding day. Wedding cake toppers can be traditional or comical, themed or monogramed, simple or complex. No matter what kind of cake topper you’re looking for, we’re pretty sure you’ll find one in our stylish collection to suit your needs.
